The Falcons are not the Packers, not by a long shot, but they do possess weapons and the Giants trashed every one of them, wore down Atlanta’s fast but smallish defense and turned a 7-2 halftime lead into a rout. “We’ll take the wins any way we can get ’em. It’s not a template how you win games, but this is Giants football,” added general manager Jerry Reese. “This is how we like to win games, we like to run the ball and play-action pass and play good defense.”

It wasn’t that long ago when the Giants defense was a complete mess, the unquestioned Achilles heel threatening to compromise all the exploits Manning was achieving. It was defense all day for the Giants, holding down the fort until Manning and the offense shook off the cobwebs of a rough first half to take total command in the second. The Falcons made sure not to allow Victor Cruz to beat them and so Nicks did, getting the first Giants touchdown on a reach-back 4-yard scoring catch and electrifying the crowd and his team with a 72-yard catch and run to make it 17-2 late in the third quarter. Mario Manningham, held without a catch last week, arose from his slumber with a 27-yard touchdown reception with 9:55 remaining to finish off the Falcons.

That once-beleaguered unit turned back the clock on Sunday afternoon and gave a dominating performance reminiscent of some of the greatest games in the Giants’ storied playoff past. They pitched a virtual shutout, smothering the Atlanta Falcons 24-2 in a wild-card playoff game, giving the Giants their first postseason win at home in nearly 11 years.

Their next chance to make noise will come next Sunday in Green Bay, where they’ll get the rematch with the Packers (15-1) they’ve been craving since they lost to them on a last-second field goal back on Dec. 4. That feels like years ago, though, to this revitalized defense.Manning Jersey

The confidence is understandable, coming off what Justin Tuck described as “probably our best effort this year” on defense. The Giants (10-7) gave up only 247 total yards. They turned Falcons running back Michael Turner (15 carries, 41 yards) into an afterthought. And they came up with two huge stops on fourth-and-1 quarterback sneaks deep in their own territory.

In fact, the only points the Falcons got came off a second-quarter safety when Eli Manning was flagged for intentional grounding in the end zone. They were able to do that, though, because the defense set the tone against a Falcons offense that thought it could bully its way to a win. Manning then hit Hakeem Nicks (6 catches, 115 yards, 2 touchdowns) for a four-yard pass that was amazingly the first playoff touchdown at home in the Manning/Coughlin Era.

Manning and Nicks would hook up again in the second half on a short pass about five yards over the middle that Nicks caught, turned up field, split five defenders and turned into a 72-yard touchdown. As we all know, Giants will face Falcons on the wild-card weekend. Both of team are busy to practice and find a way to win the other. And Giants Coach sees Big Blue’s true colors entering wild-card weekend.

Coughlin was thrilled with practice, with the vibes and the effort from his team. The Giants were flying out there at the Timex Performance Center, making plays and hitting their marks. But you know what? Nobody knows which Giant team shows up on Sunday against the Falcons, not even the Giants. Not after the sort of nutty season they’ve had.

The Giants have been up and down, then down and up. They’ve lost to bad teams such as Washington and Carolina, beaten tougher teams such as New England and the Jets. They’ve also lost all three games they played against potential NFC opponents in the playoffs – Green Bay, New Orleans and San Francisco.Bradshaw Jersey

So while there is reason to be hopeful, there is also the gnawing sense that anything can happen to a team that has relied too heavily on Eli Manning’s arm and a menacing pass rush.
